Executive Shadowing Program

The Executive Shadowing Program (ESP) is an integral part of the School’s Professional Development course. These placements do not take the form of work experience or a traditional internship, but rather a unique opportunity to work with a senior industry figure and to observe organisational functioning at a more strategic level.

Tourism Regional Immersion Project

The Tourism Regional Immersion Project (TRIP) is a key initiative of the The University of Queensland School of Tourism and local governments, regional operators and the broader community of participating Host Regions. The TRIP is an integral part of the School’s Professional Development course, which aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical work experience.

Industry Placement

The tourism and hospitality industries consistently expect to hire graduates who have practical experience and transferable skills which can be applied to a variety of work contexts. As part of the School’s Professional Development course, Industry Placement enables career pathway planning, professional and personal development, networking and self-promotional opportunities for final year Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management students.

HOSP3003 - Food and Beverage Management

This course is designed to equip students seeking careers in food and beverage with the basic concepts and tools used in its management, but also for those students seeking careers in the broader hospitality industry, as this course underlines the strategic importance of the department within organisations. Students are able to participate in the Wine Immersion Program which gives them exposure and access to professional teaching staff at the QCWT and leading wine makers, and various tourism, wine and food professionals.

HOSP3004 - Hotel Industry Management

The Holiday Inn Challenge is embedded in the coursework of Hotel Industry Management, offered by the School of Tourism. Students examine and deliver a proposal on Hotel Technology Systems for a fictitious hotel, “Holiday Inn Virtuoso Brisbane”. Areas of technology explored by students include operational hotel technology systems utilising newer technologies including e-commerce and green hotel technology with a view to managing hotel revenue.

TOUR7002 - Sustainability for Tourism Business

The growing interest in society for sustainable development and contains an overview of key events in sustainable thinking and legislation. Tourism development is examined and sustainable principles and the development process are studied in unison. Issues in green tourism, ecotourism and sustainability are critically reviewed. Previously students have been given the opportunity to particpate in an eco tour of the Boondall Wetlands.

TOUR7003 - Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Foundations

The course covers key areas such as definitions and concepts of tourism, travel and hospitality; tourism destinations and planning; travel intermediaries; the role of transportation; the particular nature of the tourism, travel and hospitality industries and the role of the public sector; and a range of specific issues such as the impact of travel and tourism on the environment and host communities, service quality, and destination marketing and management. Students will have the opportunity to focus on a particular destination or business function in detail.

HOSP7000 - International Hotel Operations

In this course students will develop an understanding of operations management in the international hotel industry. Students will have the opportunity to critically evaluate the key operational areas of food and beverage and rooms division management within the context of international hotel management. As part of the evaluation process students have previously been given the chance to learn first hand at the Marriott Hotel, Brisbane.

Guest Lectures

The School also offers guest lectures throughout the year from industry leaders such as Tourism Australia, the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), Tourism Queensland (TQ), Hilton Brisbane, and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).

Optional practical learning activities

Practical learning activities are integrated into several of our courses and are designed to complement course theory. The Hotel Operations course offers students the opportunity to gain training and experience in Fidelio Hotel Operations Software, and students enrolled in the Food and Beverage Management coursemay elect to participate in the Wine Immersion Program.
