New RHD Student Representative
Ms Hui-Ping (Eva) Cheng has been appointed RHD representative for School of Tourism. She will be supported, when necessary, by Ms Xiang Ying Mei.The main role of the student representative is to liaise between the RHD students and the staff in the School, to disseminate information and participate in the Research Committee meetings
Thank you to the outgoing student representative Ann Ashton. Ann has enhanced the overall study experience for many of our research students and has been very proactive in engaging our international students in both academic and social events. We would like to thank Ann for her hard work and professionalism and wish her well as she completes her PhD studies and moves onto the next chapter of her career.
Big year for TSA
The Tourism Students Association (TSA formally TEHL) has had a bumper year thanks to the work of the 2009 Executive Committee. Led by Chairman, David Gong the TSA has a growing membership and has hosted a raft of successful events. Read more
Outstanding thesis award
School of Tourism graduate, Rodolfo Baggio has earned a University of Queensland 2008 Dean's Award for Outstanding RHD Theses. Rodolfo’s thesis explored the complex question of why some tourist destinations were more successful than others. Read more
UQ School of Tourism among the top five in the world
Articles written by School of Tourism researchers are in the “Hottest 25”. The "Hottest 25;" represent the most frequently downloaded articles from Science Direct, January-March 2009 edition. This achievement has been realised by four members of staff, Professor Roy Ballantyne, Dr Jan Packer, Dr Megan Axelsen and Dr Noel Scott for articles in Annals of Tourism Research and Tourism Management, both categorised as A* journals. Keeping it simple: the Three Minute Thesis Competition
School of Tourism finalists in this year’s Three(3) Minute Thesis Competition, Miss Char-lee McLennan, Mr Nigel Bond and Mr Brett Walker, spoke in plain English as they outlined the essence of their respective theses’ at the BEL Faulty finals.
Ms McLennan presented a condensed version of her thesis titled The Tourism Transformation Process: An enquiry into the three main process phases. Nigel Bond recently returned from collecting data in England,summarized his thesis, Exploring the Centre: Contemporary pilgrimage and its significance and implications for religious tourism management. Flexible delivery in Australian hospitality management degrees: Perceptions of students and educators was the title of Brett’s three minute thesis topic.

It’s hard work… but someone had to go!
TOUR7003 (Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Foundations) students enjoyed a fieldtrip to Movieworld this semester, where they were addressed by one of the members of the Warner Brothers Education Team on park management, marketing, branding, visitor profiles and the visitor experience. The fieldtrip also included information about the parks’ recent product development initiatives and marketing programs. Students gained valuable, firsthand insights into how the programs were developed, marketed, their success in the marketplace and given an opportunity to network.

HR paper a winner
The recent RHD paper writing competition was won by Rozila Ahmad. Congratulations go to Rozila for her paper titled: Human Resource Practices System Differentiation and How it Affects Employees in the Hotel Industry. Rozila was recognised for her achievement at the School staff meeting and received $1500.00 in her research account. Second place went to Jie Wang for her paper titled: A theoretical model of Crisis Management Planning: factors influencing planning behaviour in the Australian hotel industry.
UQ student finalist in national retail study scholarship
Kate Cuddihy was one of three national finalists in the inaugural Connections and Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) Magazines Retail Study Tour Scholarship.
Kate attributed her success to her studies at the UQ School of Tourism where she is enrolled in a Graduate Diploma in Business (International Events Management). Her understanding and insight of services management was sparked by her study in the same area. Read more
Insight into managing how Lions roar
School of Tourism, Adjunct Professor Mr Michael Bowers, Chief Executive Officer of the Brisbane Lions, hosted a group of master’s students studying Strategic Sport Management (MHTS7006) at the Gabba stadium.
“This was an opportunity for our post graduate students to gain an executive’s perspective of sports management at an elite level. It is also a demonstration of the value of having an adjunct professorial board who are working with the School to deliver outstanding student experiences.” said Associate Professor Ian Patterson course coordinator.
Students from the course endorsed the value of the visit “…meeting with Michael Bowers, was really interesting and it's not often you get to meet such high placed people.” said Ms Carmen Urban, MHTS7006 student.

Dr Jan: A helping hand
RHD students from the School benefitted from a workshop conducted by Dr Jan Packer. The workshop held on campus at St Lucia was titled: Getting published - Do you need help? Do you have questions?
Dr Packer, who has a substantial publication list, shared her experience and skills to assist students to understand the value of publishing their research as part of the PhD process and to improve the possibility of being published. She explored the process of writing and submitting a research paper and explained how the review process works.
Student response to the workshop was overwhelmingly positive and was a great opportunity for socialising.
Valuable interaction at the Hilton
Master’s students completing studies in International Hotel Management found their field trip to the Brisbane Hilton a great way to get outside the classroom and interact with the real world. Read more

Doctors Noel Scott and Peiyi Ding felt the weight of being the supervisory team for both Ms Zhou (Vicky) Wang and Ms Jianyu (Jenny) Ma. Both doctoral students successfully confirmed their candidature at the recent School of Tourism confirmation session. Read more
