A new recipe for recruiting success

They're among the most needed workers in Australia, and now UQ research has uncovered why chefs may be so difficult to recruit and retain. In a recent report, Employing Chefs in Queensland, School of Tourism researchers Dr Charles Arcodia and Mr Richard Robinson suggest the content and listing of job vacancy ads may need greater attention. School of Tourism forum links industry leaders

More than 100 of Queensland’s finest tourism minds considered the impact of the Global Financial Crisis on the industry at a forum last month. Organised by the UQ School of Tourism in partnership with Brisbane Marketing, the forum, Economic Storm Riders – Turning Downturn into Opportunity, heard corporate culture that embraced creativity and valued staff input was just one of the ways savvy operators were using the downturn to their advantage. School of Tourism Director of Industry Partnerships Dr David Solnet said the forum fostered the connection between academia and the coal face of industry and was designed to keep the School of Tourism top of mind among industry and government partners and representatives.

Sustainable tourism through capacity building

The School of Tourism has delivered an innovative program to strengthen the capacity of Vietnam’s Hanoi University of Culture (HUC), to contribute to the sustainable development of the country’s tourism industry through its undergraduate tourism programs. The program was developed and delivered by School of Tourism staff Dr Noel Scott and Ms Char-lee McLennan. Content focused on tourism marketing and product development including successful destination planning and management through governance, effects of short-term and long-term investment in the tourism industry, sustainable development of tourism products and services and meeting the demands of the global tourism market. Supporting excellence in professional development

The commitment the School of Tourism has to the continuing development of strong industry ties was evidenced by the School’s sponsorship of the Professional Development Award at the 2009 Restaurant and Catering Brisbane Awards for Excellence. The award for excellence was won by Conrad Jupiter’s.

Tourism interns 'skill up' in regional destinations

Southeast Queensland’s regional tourism operators have benefited from an innovative program initiated by the University of Queensland in September this year.

"This initiative is a fantastic example of how collaborative efforts between the higher education sector, tourism operators and regional tourism authorities can in turn benefit the community." Queensland Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading, Hon Peter Lawlor said. Read more

UQ helps rebuild Thai tourism

The School of Tourism has played a pivotal role in brokering the development of the Thai-Australian Tourism and Hospitality Centre.

“It is an excellent example of international collaboration in capacity building and in direct response to a Tsunami-affected region. It should provide a creative platform for future education and research initiatives." Dr Charles Arcodia said. Read more

Luxury at what cost?

Preliminary results from a three-year research project undertaken by School of Tourism, Senior Lecturer, Dr Charles Arcodia into water and energy consumption and water disposal in the hotel industry reveals that Australian hotels were among the top five energy users in the commercial and service sector. The ramifications of such high levels of consumption will have an impact upon operators and tourists. Read more

UNESCO commissioned study

A scoping study undertaken by Professor Roy Ballantyne and Dr Brent Ritchie from the School of Tourism will underpin the development of a comprehensive management strategy for Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. UNESCO commissioned the study in response to an increasing number of complaints from tourists about their experience at Ha Long Bay.

“The visitor experience is not being managed successfully with the major problems revolving around visitors being deceived by tour operators, pollution, crowding and duplication.” Dr Ritchie said. Read more

Chengdu Giant Panda Base: signage research

Professor Roy Ballantyne, Dr Jan Packer and Ms Karen Hughes have returned from a trip to China where they were engaged in an ongoing consultancy project with the Chengdu Giant Panda Base. The focus of their research was to determine the effectiveness of visitor signage at the panda base and explore the differences between Chinese and Western perceptions of signs. Read more

UQ students impressed senior executives from the Intercontinental Hotel Group with cutting edge technology applications at the “Holiday Inn Virtuoso Hotel”. Read more

Finalist in national retail study scholarship

Kate Cuddihy was one of three national finalists in the inaugural Connections and Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) Magazines Retail Study Tour Scholarship. Kate attributed her success to her studies at the School of Tourism where she is enrolled in a Graduate Diploma in Business (International Events Management). Her understanding and insight of services management was sparked by her study in the same area. Read more
