Sustainable tourism through capacity building
UQ’s School of Tourism has delivered an innovative program to strengthen the capacity of Vietnam’s Hanoi University of Culture (HUC),to contribute to the sustainable development of the country’s tourism industry through its undergraduate tourism programs.
The program was developed and delivered by UQ School of Tourism staff Dr Noel Scott and Ms Char-lee McLennan. Content focused on tourism marketing and product development including successful destination planning and management through governance, effects of short-term and long-term investment in the tourism industry, sustainable development of tourism products and services and meeting the demands of the global tourism market. Welcome Erik de Wit: Media Officer
Eric de Wit joins the School of Tourism as Media Officer. Eric brings to the position a background of sixteen years experience in print media. Most recently Eric has worked in the UQ Office of Marketing and Communications and currently holds a position with Queensland Newspapers as a sub-editor. In welcoming Eric we also farewell Jodie Powell who has accepted a full time position with News Corporation.
HR paper a winner
The recent RHD paper writing competition was won by Rozila Ahmad. Congratulations go to Rozila for her paper titled: Human Resource Practices System Differentiation and How it Affects Employees in the Hotel Industry.Rozila was recognised for her achievement at the School staff meeting and received $1500.00 in her research account in addition to an exquisite School of Tourism mug. Second place went to Jie Wang for her paper titled: A theoretical model of Crisis Management Planning: factors influencing planning behaviour in the Australian hotel industry.
Caught in the SSB rut?
Refresh and reinvigorate your palate by joining the SoT Wine Club. The wine tasting club is first and foremost a social gathering where members will also taste, judge and discuss wine. The Wine Club will meet on the second Friday of each month at a cost of $15.00 per person.
Outstanding thesis award
School of Tourism graduate, Rodolfo Baggio has earned a University of Queensland 2008 Dean's Award for Outstanding RHD Theses. Rodolfo’s thesis explored the complex question of why some tourist destinations were more successful than others. Read more
Clever development the key to sustainable tourism
UQ School of Tourism PhD scholar Char-lee McLennan is examining how economic structure and government policy, laws and business practice interrelate in the context of tourism in three Queensland regions – the Murweh Shire, Hervey Bay and the Gold Coast. Read more
Leading the Panel of Experts
Associate Professor Steve Craig-Smith will Chair the first Panel Session at this year’s Panel of Experts Forum, Developing Excellence in Tourism, Hospitality and Events Education. Steve will discuss Global Accreditation and Quality Assurance Issues at the Forum coordinated by The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE).

School of Tourism’s iCEVALS the best
Course Evaluation Surveys (iCEVALS) completed by School of Tourism undergraduate students resulted in the School achieving the highest iCEVAL scores in the Faculty for Semester 1. 2009.
iCEVALS are used as a mechanism to evaluate student’s impressions of teaching performance and course content.
Global Events Congress (GEC)
Next year the Global Events Congress (GEC) will be hosted by Leeds Metropolitan University on July 14-16. The Congress was launched in Brisbane in 2006, hosted in Malaysia in 2007 and then China in 2008. Please let me know if you are expecting to attend.

Overwhelming interest, highlights Industry Day success
Success is measured in many ways and no matter what measure you use The UQ School of Tourism Industry Day 2009 was a success. Built on the back of the Meet the Industry Leaders Event (MILE) established in 2001, Industry Day incorporated three events: The Adjunct Professors Discussion Panel, Industry Forum and MILE with each event drawing crowds in excess of planned numbers.
