UQ studies give `dream job’ winner the edge
The winner of New Zealand’s “dream job’’ says her studies gave her a distinct advantage over other candidates in the competition.
Nicquel Rhoden, a final-year student at UQ’s School of Tourism, said she was thrilled to win.
“It was definitely my uni studies in tourism that set me apart, because the organisers told me I was the best qualified of the final three candidates,’’ Ms Rhoden, 20, said. Read more
School of Tourism’s iCEVALS the best
Course Evaluation Surveys (iCEVALS) completed by School of Tourism undergraduate students resulted in the School achieving the highest iCEVAL scores in the Faculty for Semester 1, 2009.
iCEVALS are used as a mechanism to evaluate student’s impressions of teaching performance and course content.
A taste of hospitality
Drinking at university is usually confined to outside the classroom, but more than 100 second and third-year School of Tourism students had the opportunity to sample a range of wines from Queensland icon Sirromet as part of their course. The tasting held as part of the School of Tourism’s Food and Beverage Management (HOSP3003) course, aimed to give students an insight into one of the state’s leading wine producers. Read more

University of Queensland tourism interns 'skill up' in regional destinations
Southeast Queensland’s regional tourism operators have benefited from an innovative programme initiated by the University of Queensland (UQ) in September this year.
“This initiative is a fantastic example of how collaborative efforts between the higher education sector, tourism operators and regional tourism authorities can in turn benefit the community." Queensland Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading, Hon Peter Lawlor. Read more
Alumni Kristie Gillman attributes her success to ESP
The Executive Shadowing Program (ESP) organised and run by the School of Tourism provides an opportunity for the School’s highest achieving students to undertake exclusive placement in an industry sector of their choice. These placements provide an opportunity to work with a senior industry figure and to observe organisational functioning at a more strategic level and differ significantly from other intern or work experience programs.
